Monday was an unusual night at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
It wasn't so unusual that tenor Juan Diego Florez dazzled the audience with nine high C's in a row in the aria "Ah, Mes Amis," from Donizetti's La Fille du Regiment.
And it wasn't unusual that the crowd went crazy.
But then Florez did something that hasn't been done at the Met in 14 years—he sang the aria again.

Arias for Rubini January 2008
"The “king of tenors” of his day, Giovanni Battista Rubini (1794–1854) triumphed across Europe and sang works written for him by Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini. His contemporaries reported a singer of keen dramatic intensity who could reach dizzying vocal heights, including an F above high C.
On the heels of Cecilia Bartoli’s Maria, a tribute to 19th-century diva Maria Malibran, comes Juan Diego Flórez’s recital of music associated with Rubini. It is a less eccentric undertaking than Maria, which features performances of on-the-edge ferocity and almost lurid detail. Flórez instead sings with the adamantine elegance and disciplined fire that have been the hallmarks of his career.
Lovers of parlor tricks, take note: Flórez’s top note is a mere high E-flat, and some of his high Ds sound slightly strained. Lovers of art: Revel in the crystal-clear enunciation, faultless intonation, jaw-dropping agility and patrician sense of musical architecture that make Flórez a singer without peer. Rossini remains his most congenial author—Arnoldo’s aria from Guglielmo Tell is thrillingly athletic and blazing with élan, while a rare, insanely ornate alternate aria from La donna del lago boggles the mind. Arias from Il pirata and Bianca e Fernando show Flórez to be a master of Bellini’s musica filosofica (so called because of the close interpenetration of melody and text), while a scene from Donizetti’s Marino Faliero smolders with melancholy. Roberto Abbado presides expertly over this for-the-ages program." Marion Lignana Rosenberg, Time Out New York (January 17, 2008 - January 22, 2008)

Juan Diego Flórez sings from the heart in a new album of irresistable popular songs from his native South America
Juan Diego Flórez was brought up with the sounds of Latin-American music. His father Rubén, was a singer of popular Peruvian songs - particularly those by Chabuca Granda, for which the boy developed an early affection. His mother, María Teresa, who is a great marinera dancer, taught him to appreciate "criollo" Peruvian music, whilst his beloved grandmother, Ena Rosa, opened his ears to the tangos of Gardel and others, which she used to play on her old piano.
